Betula pubescens is commonly known as downy birch, with other common names including moor birch, white birch, European white birch or hairy birch.

The downy birch will grow to 10 to 20 m with a slender crown and smooth but dull grey-white bark.

Downy birch is more upright than silver birch, with shoots that are smooth grey-brown in colour and leaves that are more finely serrated than a Silver Birch.

Downy birch provides food and habitat for more than 300 insect species.

Elder is a small tree, popular for gardens, providing a display of fragrant flowers and soot-dark fruits.

You can use the flowers create cordial and the fruit for wine and preserves.

According to folklore, if you burn elder wood, you will see the devil, but if you plant elder by your house it would keep the devil away.

The flowers appear in May – June and the vitamin C rich berries ripen in late summer.

Elder is common across the UK and its flowers provide nectar for a variety of insects and the berries are eaten by birds and mammals.

Typically, Elder will grow to between 5 – 7 metres

Our native Rowan or Mountain Ash tree are gorgeously colourful garden trees and one of our most popular and it’s easy to see why.

The Rowan is not a fussy tree and will grow in almost any soil conditions and in sunny and partially shaded locations and will reach a maximum height of around 10m tall at maturity, so a perfect smaller tree suitable for most gardens.

Wild Cherry are one of the finest ornamental trees we offer.

With fantastic white Cherry blossom in April, attractive red bark and cherries in late summer, the tall pyramidal structure can reach 18m at maturity.

We’ve found these to be one of the faster growing garden trees in all well drained soil types. It’s an attractive tree with a high conservation value and provides a fruit crop within 3-4 years.
