Description

sorbus hupehensis tree

Originating from central and western China, Sorbus hupehensis, commonly referred to as Chinese Rowan, made its debut in the UK courtesy of Ernest Wilson in 1910. Renowned for its ornamental features and graceful demeanor, this deciduous tree enchants with its captivating presence.

Displaying robust growth, the Chinese Rowan boasts a rounded to broadly spreading crown adorned with a compact head of ascending purple-brown branches. Its pinnate leaves, comprised of 11-17 leaflets, form a dense canopy, characterised by a striking blue-green hue that transitions to fiery reds in autumn, casting a mesmerising spectacle before winter’s arrival.

In late spring and early summer, clusters of small, white flowers embellish the branches in attractive corymbs. These delicate blooms give rise to small, enduring white fruits tinged with pink, persisting on the tree until February. Not only do they contribute to the visual allure, but they also serve as a vital food source for wildlife.

The Chinese Rowan finds itself perfectly suited for landscaping, gardens and residential areas alike. While it may exhibit a relatively slow growth rate, its enduring charm and ornamental value make it a cherished addition to any landscape.

The compact stature of this tree reaches 6 meters in height and spans 3 meters wide after 25 years of growth, making it ideal for smaller spaces. With a rounded to broadly spreading crown, it provides ample shade and visual appeal.

Thriving in environments ranging from partial shade to full sun, and flourishing in acidic, well-drained soil, it showcases resilience even in clay-rich conditions. Birds, especially during the winter months, are attracted to the nutritious berries provided by this resilient tree.
